FCCW 10-Year Archive Exhibit Curated by LACA
Description
Los Angeles Contemporary Archive (LACA) has catalogued, and created an online, searchable inventory of the Feminist Center for Creative Work’s (FCCW) archives, which include documents, printed materials, photos, and other records of work, gatherings, and activities, since the organization’s inception.
In celebration of FCCW’s 10-Year Anniversary, LACA is presenting an exhibit based on these archival materials, and have created several large scrapbooks, packed with facsimiles and duplicates from the center’s archive. These scrapbooks contain collages of mementos from generations of feminists working together in creative practice, and trace many of the complex lives of the people who have contributed to FCCW. Additionally, the scrapbooks include newspaper clippings to offer context on current events and the political climate, which impacted how and why our communities gathered.
These scrapbooks act as another way of researching archival holdings or interpreting an archive’s Finding Aid — a kind of visual inventory. Alongside the archival materials presented in the exhibit, the scrapbooks model and chronicle different ways to be together and dream up possibilities for working toward intersectional feminism. The exhibit aims to act as a reminder that the tools for our liberation will not be found in dominant archives, but in the act of coming together to share what we choose to recover, connect, and celebrate.
Together, LACA and FCCW invite you to come in and browse, flip through the books, and find your own narrative. You’re invited to the opening of this exhibit on Saturday, May 31, 6–8PM at FCCW: 3053 Rosslyn St. LA, CA 90065. You’re also welcome to explore the inventoried, materials online, or schedule a research appointment to look through FCCW’s growing archival collection in-person at LACA.
